A bit of background:
After years of pining after the knitted sweater ( the original 1895 from MET museum - but there are plenty of similar types in evidence too), I finally managed to pull it thought:-)
I cannot knit - so it took some time to find a knitter with a passion for history, who would be able to interpret patterns and, most crucually, adapt them and change as needed.
The first sweater, the prototype, arrived after quite a lot of work, changes, amendments etc, and it worked mostly fine ( the one I am wearing in the picture). It wasnt perfect though - we had to play with the shape of the neck, button placement as well as its dimentions - the sleeves, fabulous as they are, were simply too big and too heavy. Still, a wearable garment and I love it to bits!
This model is the improved version, with less voluminous sleeves and a functional button up collar.
* A replica of the 1895 original, mimicking the stitching and decoration.
* Handkitted in high quality wool
* Collar buttons up with wood buttons
* Fashionable sleeves with voluminous upper part and turn back cuff. The sleeves can be worn with light padding for a more rouded profile too!
* warm but breathable
The sweaters were still worn on the standard udergarments of the era - chemise, corset and a camisole or a blouse. Jackets could be worn on top of them ( the sleeves are then providing nice support for the jacket gigot sleeves!
